Half Day Pre-Con Workshop: Extending Battery Life to Empower the IoT/IIoT
Many of the key, enabling technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT) or Industrial IoT (IIoT) have advanced over the years to take us from the emerging concept of adding the “smart” label to everything to now delivering products in the consumer and industrial mainstreams. Self-powered energy sources (a.k.a. – energy harvesting or EH), intelligent power management, advancements in semiconductors/MEMS, low-power wireless communications, energy storage, and test/validation have converged in a perfect storm of opportunity for optimizing energy efficiency, utilization, and therefore battery life.

This half-day, pre-conference symposium will take attendees on a comprehensive journey through this vast, power IoT ecosystem by talking about each of these topics in terms of the individual nuances/challenges/needs/opportunities that all converge under the common objective of maximizing energy efficiency and extending product battery life. This will be accomplished by delivering the information in very pragmatic formats of best practices and guidelines geared primarily toward Design Engineers and those associated with architecting and delivering products to market. There will also be plenty of panel/open discussion to engage participants and facilitate the real-time needs of engineers working to get products from a bench concept into the hands of customers.

BONUS: the day will conclude with a special networking demo session that will cover many of the salient technologies and use cases in an interactive, non-commercial format focusing on functionality and design enablement.

Wireless Power Unleashes New Competitive Advantages in Industry 4.0
Industry 4.0 strategies deliver bottom-line results With Industry 4.0 fully underway, many companies are scaling up deployments of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), 5G connectivity, robotics, and drones. Its with good reason, according to a 2020 Deloitte study, approximately 90% of organizations with comprehensive Industry 4.0 strategies generated at least 5% annual revenue growth in the most recent year. Analysts at Mckinsey & Company say it is not uncommon to see 30-50% reductions in machine downtime, 10-30% increases in throughput, 15-30% improvements in labor productivity, and 85% more accurate forecasting with digitally enabled factories. The key enabler of Industry 4.0? Wireless Power. Many of today's Industry 4.0 technologies are characterized by complex, expensive, limiting and sometimes hazardous cabling and connector solutions. In fact, more than 60 percent of costs associated with industrial IoT (IIoT) set-up are spent on cabling and installation. Batteries, power cables and WiFi simply wont be enough to support the explosion of data and connected devices appearing in factories and facilities today. Wireless power provides a solution that enables industrial organizations to maximize the return on their technology investments. During this session, learn how wireless power enhances autonomy, cuts costs, improves safety, and increases operational efficiency for Industry 4.0 technologies.

High-Frequency Testing of MEMS Sensors with Translational and Rotational Vibration Excitation up to 2 MHz
In order to test and characterize MEMS sensors the technical boundary for inertial sensor stimulation has been shifted significantly over the last years. While a few years ago testing in the frequency range up to 5 or 20 kHz was sufficient do now smaller and smaller MEMS and NEMS structures imply a trend towards much higher vibration frequencies. In this presentation a novel piezoelectric vibration exciter will be described that allows defined and precise vibration testing of MEMS/NEMS sensors for test laboratories in the range of up to 2MHz mechanical vibration frequencies at highest acceleration amplitudes.

The Need for More Sensors vs. the Need for New Approaches with the Sensor Data We Have
Many companies state that “We are not getting enough insight from our sensor data. What is your sensor roadmap? What new sensors can you include in your product to help us better utilize your equipment and optimize our manufacturing processes”. Perhaps users should take an alternate approach? Maybe they should ask, “What can I do with my existing sensor system?’ The amount of data generated by a large sensor system over a short timeframe can be quite large, into the gigabytes and terabytes. By using whole data logs and multivariate machine learning, it is possible to expose data and trends about underlying hardware and manufacturing processes that were not originally envisioned when the sensor system was created. These techniques can drive many different kinds of improved outcomes during the manufacturing process. In this discussion, we will discuss techniques that can be used to extend the utility of sensor systems, and describe examples of “doing more with less” in the sensor world.

IoT and IoB in Safety, Security, and Risk Assessment of Critical Infrastructures
The current landscape in the 21st century is more complex than ever before, especially in the context of critical infrastructure (CIS), which includes assets, systems, and networks – physical and virtual – that are essential to the proper functioning of the economy, public health, and safety, security, or any combination of the above. Although the CIS is considered critical, its oversight can vary according to a nation’s unique needs and resources. The CIS often encompasses industrial control systems, including supervisory control and data acquisition systems to automate industrial processes. The threat of crippling cyberattacks against industrial control systems has severe security, financial, and supply-chain implications as the attackers are increasingly going after CIS and operational technology (OT) while improving their penetration capabilities. Coupling this challenge with the internet of behavior (IoB) presents both positive and negative impacts. This presentation outlines the implications of IoT and IoB in the context of Safety, Security, and Risk Assessment.

Case Study: Evaluating an Automotive User Interface Design
A current trend in automotive control interfaces is to move away from mechanical switches and dials which are prone to wear out from over use to magnetic Hall-effect sensors which reduce mechanical contact points. While standard Hall-effect sensors offer reliable feedback and are appropriate across a wide range of functions, many automotive control modules benefit greatly when implemented using newer three-dimensional sensors. These 3D sensors offer internal diagnostics, complete visibility of the magnetic field, and power savings while simultaneously minimizing the overall solution size. In this presentation we will examine a case study for steering column controls by evaluating the design process and functional implications of a turn indicator with integrated windshield wiper controls.

Demo Session - Solid-State Micro-Batteries to Replace Coin Cells in BLE Asset Monitoring Solutions
IOT solutions are consuming less and less energy per operation or per unit of time. But from time to time, the solutions require some power or pulse currents e.g. to drive actuators or a short-medium range RF protocol (BLE, Zigbee, LoRa). Many solutions are battery-less or use very polluting and bulky coin cells. The battery-less solutions do use in fact energy harvesting to collect ambient energy and a capacitor to store the collected energy for a short while and then power a sensor node; such systems work well but limit the effective use cases because the collected energy must be used immediately. The ideal solution would consist in replacing coin cells and capacitors or supercapacitors by very compact energy micro-batteries, which are also able to deliver power. To illustrate this, we will demonstrate a fully autonomous BLE beacon operating 24/24h, 7/7d and powered by an indoor solar cell and one solid-state rechargeable micro-battery of only 100µA.h whereas normally a 100mA.h coin cell should have been used to get similar operation.

The Evolving IoT Mission & its Various RF & Network Technologies: A Survey of IoT Transit Technologies
There are many innovations in the rapidly evolving IoT & M2M world. And given IoTs wide range of missions, levels of quality & resilience--a key (but largely ignored) consideration is the path IoT data takes from its sensors to its productive use. This session seeks to illuminate the fast evolving picture of how sensors access the connectivity they need from private or public networks (that can be terrestrial or orbital) which channels data at different costs, and implies: a survey of data paths & network technology choices are key to the business model viability of narrowband use-cases, a dizzying array of business models supporting IoT applications & narrowband comms must be bounded & characterizedso investors can understand them & support them w/long-term funding. The current networks, missions, & value of IoT is still quickly evolving, and linkages between the edge network technology carrying IoT data, and the mainstream digital infrastructure technology that will aggregate it are too. Well assert that any network technology (& how it allows egress from narrowband networks) will always vary by business mode; which ties to competing Chipsets, Standards & transit costs.
